In this body of work I encapsulate the dichotomy between development and the preservation of nature within Florida landscapes. In the Summer of 2024, there was a new wave of governor proposals that threatened Florida’s natural landscape. These plans were created to exploit pristine land and convert these areas for recreation and lodging. The environmental results of these plans would be devastating for several natural habitats and protected species.
As an environmentalist and photographer, I felt that it was important to capture how development can alter the beauty of an untouched landscape. As I highlight the manipulation of the environment in my imagery, I urge my viewer to cultivate a desire to preserve “the real Florida”. I juxtapose my landscapes with the night sky to display the vastness of nature and the beauty of the stars, something far from mankind. The stars viewed by us are as they existed years in the past, a nod to preservation and the passage of time that furthers my message.
During my final semester of college in Spring 2025, I camped at several locations to capture the night sky. I used a 20mm lens, and kept the editing to a minimum in order to preserve the authenticity of the landscape.
